45 YEARS EXPERIENCE OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION IN LITHUANIA

Kidney transplantation, as separate field of medicine, has long historical way in Lithuania. Started from experimental work and collection of different professionals, first kidney transplantation from human cadaver donor was performed at Vilnius university general surgery hospital in 18 February 1970. The knowledge of that period with strict central regulation and isolation from Western countries influenced the process. Transplantation was available for limited amont of patients. With independence of Lithuania in 1991, contacts with experienced transplantation centers became available in wide range. Soon success rate increased, organisational structure and law basis reached European standarts. Kidney transplantation became available for all patients with terminal renal disease. In this article overview of kidney transplantation history in Lithuania is given: from experiments and first transplantation, till establishment of organisational structures and newest achievements.
